Copy file function-what is the scope?

Postby liparulo on Wed Jul 28, 2010 4:40 pm

I want to use QK to make backups of files on an ongoing basis. For example: Copy the Word doc "WORD _DOC_1" into a backup folder automatically every hour. My question is about the scope of the QuicKey: In this example, should the scope be WORD (because it is a Word doc) OR FINDER (since the copy file function of Mac is a Finder function) OR ALL APPLICATIONS (to cover the bases)?

A second question about this: Will this QK work (ie, copy the document automatically at the timed interval) whether or not the application which created the file is open, or does this depend on the Scope setting?

Thank you!

you would want to use the All Applications scope and have a Repeat trigger for every hour. If you want it to work only when in a certain scope you would set it up with that scope. Here are the problems I see:

1) it will do this every hour of every day when your computer is on
2) the Copy does not create multiple copies - it will only do a one time copy or will replace the copy that is already there. From your post that doesn't sound like what you wanted.

Yeah, that's actually what I want: a copy of a file, updated every hour. So, if I understand: Use the scope All Apps if I want it to continue making copies as long as the computer is on --or-- use the scope Word [for example] if I want to make copies only while Word is open.

correct, but to clarify if the scope is set to Word - it will only trigger when Word is the active application.
