Apple will deprecate 32 bit

Apple will deprecate 32 bit

Postby rfwilmut » Sat Jun 17, 2017 12:28 am

It appears that in about two years time Apple's system will no longer support 32 bit applications. This of course includes QuicKeys, which hasn't been updated for years. It's a program I depend on, but sooner or later I shall have to buy a new Mac and be forced to move from Mavericks to whatever system Apple are providing at the time, almost certainly finding that QuicKeys won't work. Is any attempt being made to update it, even if only to make it 64 bit?

I just purchased the latest Mac this week (MacBook Pro 13-inch, 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports) running the latest OS (10.12.5). Was able to install just fine.

That said, if Apple truly does drop support for 32 bit in a few years - that will definitely be an issue.

Yes, there's no immediate issue, but by all reports it's likely that 32 bit applications won't run on new Macs by 2020 - not really all that far away, particularly considering how long is is since QK was updated.

We are aware of the report on MacRumors. It is covered in our plans.

Uh oh. Looks like it's getting close to that time – I'm seeing articles about how, starting today to tomorrow, we're going to get notifications about the upcoming end of 32-bit app support when we launch apps of that kind. Any word on a QuicKeys update that will keep it running? Like many people, I've been using it for about forever and can't imagine not having it.

Apple hasn't said for sure but it looks like the next OS might be only 64-bit. There should be more info at the upcoming WWDC on when it will happen. We have been looking into what it would take and hope there will be a solution. As soon as we have information we will post it on our website and this forum.
